Boring

My father returned to Chelsea.
I remained in town received a
note from Smith saying that
he had driven the pile still farther
and put up the Sheers —
Boat — 0..2..6

Thursday 22^nd
~~???~~ Went to the office from Benjamin’s
where I slept. My father came,
and went away to M^r Telford
I remained engaged on the Kingstown
Bridge went to Lunch and from
thence to the insurance office
went from there to the house n^o30
Bridge St^rt returned to the office
M^r Martineau called about his
pump will return it to him in
a day or two — M^r Baylis
of the monthly magazine called
to send him the statement on
Saturday morning —

Wednesday
Went to town with my father
received a note from Smith saying
that the pile went very hard. went
down, found they had driven it about
3^ft this morning they thought they
could get it down to the clay but not
to day told Smith to put a pair
of sheers over the pipe and get the
Gravel out —
Went to M^r Sweet about my
father’s accounts he made some
remarks on M^r Portal’s and desired
to see my father my father
went — The committee sat
as usual I my father was called
in – I was sent for to speak
as to the quantity of water in
the shaft — The agreement
between the Com^mittee and my father
was signed by M^r Smith and my
father

M^r Teape called to say that the
water in his well was returned as
usual, to thank us for the trouble
that had been taken and to
enquire wether the same inconvenience
was likely to occur in sinking the
great shaft I answered that every
precaution would be take to prevent
it on account of the expense which
would otherwise be incurred for pumping
&c—
Tuesday 20^th
went to town . was sent for by M^r
Montagne went to him and there was
nothing to say or do – [Went down to
Redriff found the pile driven about
8^ft it sunk about an inch a blow –
nothing particular. The pipe ready
for boring but waiting for the engine
to draw the rods. —

Monday
Went to town called on Sir E Banks to
tell him that my father was not
well enough to ~~com~~ come to town –
S^r E B.– not at home left my card and
a message — [Went to redriff found
the small pipe driven nearly if not
quite to the clay. the water rose in
the shaft to within 3^ft of the ground
it rose and fell about 18^inches with the tide.
Order’d according to my father’s directions
a pile 10×10^inches and 33^ft long to be got
and to be driven to the clay if possible.
the ground on the surface to be cleared
as deep as the water would permit. —
returned to the office found Sir E B.
had called. waited for Pritchard.–
asked him the necessary questions as
to the number of hands he could supply
&c– to which he gave satisfactory
answers — Desired him to call at
Chelsea to morrow morning before eleven.

Saturday 17^th
Went to Sylvester with a sketch
for the vignette for the checks –
Went down to Redriff found the
large pipe down about 24^ft below the
surface of the ground– a good deal of
water– returned to the office– M^r Gray
called and kept me a long time explaining
the drawings &c– to him it seems he
is going to write a new pamphlet …
M^r Marten and M^r Wollaston called me to
explain the affair of M^r Teap’s Well –
received a note from Sir E Banks stating
that he would call on my father on
Monday at 12 —
